Learning Management Systems
UNC Asheville has two Learning Management Systems (LMS) available for the campus community.
Our synchronous LMS is Elluminate. This software is a realtime web conferencing application. Users connected in an Elluminate sessions can talk to each other using voice over IP, share desktop applications, collaborate on projects, share a whiteboard and chat. The session can be recorded for later playback. For more information on Elluminate, and to schedule a session, contact Greg Dillingham or Emily Ellis in Distance Learning Services, 828-251-6057.
Our asynchronous LMS is WebCT. This software application provides an online space for course materials, syllibi, assignment dropbox, discussion forum, online testing, online gradebook, and more. With WebCT you have all the tools you need to teach a wholly online course, or supplement your in-class meeting with online materials and activities. For more information on WebCT and to set up a WebCT course space, contact John Myers, 828-250-3885.
Please Note: Our current WebCT will expire after the Spring 2008 semester. We have been evaluating other platforms as a replacement for WebCT. Currently the leading candidate is Moodle. Moodle is an open source application which is in keeping with the PACE recommendations. In addition, the UNC system and the NC Community College system have entered into an agreement to host a Moodle installation to which UNCA will have access. We are also exploring other hosting possibilities. Migration from WebCT will begin during the Spring semester, 2008, with all courses being moved by the end of the summer, 2008.
